SHE'S BEEN LIVING IN HER WHITE BREAD WORLD: PRIVILEGE AND MENTAL HEALTH

How and why did commentary about a circulating picture impact so many of us?

Take some time off work. Do something just for yourself tonight. Talk to a professional. Ask for an accommodation.

"Have you read Untamed by Glennon Doyle yet?" "Of course," I told my friend, "It's pretty much white women porn." You know the story. Affluent middle-aged white woman takes time for herself to grow. The trips to India. The mindfulness retreats. Setting boundaries. Self-reflection. Living the life she wants to, consequences be damned. Leave your husband. Open up to others about your experience.

Money. Financial and job security. Job with benefits. Access to care.

Ableism. Mental health privilege. Support privilege. Cultural privilege.

Intersectionality. What would this experience have been like for a women of colour? And/or a woman in an abusive relationship?

Outlier - influence of ancestry, financial input on success

Why I am a therapist who is hesitant about therapy: minimizes the impact of culture and context on wellbeing, wellness.

About

Hi! I'm Shannon and I am a Registered Psychotherapist. I also have lived experience with mental illness. My site is geared towards the discussion of various mental health and wellness topics. The hope is to demystify some mental health concepts and strategies; to increase mental health and emotional literacy; and to continue to normalize and destigmatize mental illness.
